Fish Oil Tablets

Fish oil tablets are one of the fish oil supplements people like to take. Why? You get fish oils from the tissues of oily fish, it is recommended for a healthy diet, because it contains the omega 3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), precursor to eicosanoids, which help to reduce inflammation throughout the body.

However, fish no not naturally produce omega 3 fatty acids, they actually accumulate them from either eating algae that produce the fatty acids, fish such as herring and sardines do this. Fish like mackerel, trout, salmon and tuna get their omega 3 fatty acids by eating the smaller fish. But because these fish are at the top of the food chain they can accumulate toxic substances in fish oil. This is the reason why the FDA recommends that you try to limit the amount of predatory fish you eat (tuna, salmon, trout and mackerel) due to the high levels of toxic containments such as:

- Mercury
- Dioxin
- PCBs
- Chlordane

Due to this limitation, a lot of people have turned to fish oil supplements like fish oil tablets to get enough omega 3 fatter acids.

Fish oil tablets and other supplements have come under examination in recent years. In early 2006, some government agencies such as the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) and the Food Standards Agency (FDA) in the UK reported that PCB levels exceeded the new European maximum limits in several different fish oil brands, this required these brands to withdraw their products temporarily.
