How to Remove Fish Oil Smell

Some odors wipe away with no effort at all. However, there are some that just never seem to go away no matter how hard you try. They soak into porous surfaces like wooden counter tops, cutting boards, fabric, carpet, wood flooring, wall materials, clothing, and even your skin. One of the absolute peskiest is fish oil smell. There is nothing quite as off-putting as coming into a room and wondering if you accidentally took a wrong turn into the seafood department. So how do you get rid of this aromatic pest?

Before you go reaching for an expensive odor remover product like Febreeze, remember that there is a cheap and natural solution available. Do you have some vinegar in your pantry? Wet a rag with it (use white vinegar if you do not want to introduce a colored stain to the area, especially if the affected area is porous) and try using that to clean the area. For example, a countertop with a bad fish oil smell should be wiped down vigorously with the rag, then wrung out in the sink, re-soaked with the vinegar, re-wrung, and so forth. To avoid wasting vinegar, you can partially dilute it with water.

Because vinegar has a strong smell of its own, you might think that you are just covering up the offending odor. This is not the case, however. Vinegar naturally helps to break down and remove tough odors. In addition, once it is wiped up, vinegar does not leave a lingering scent.

As strange as it sounds, another great way to remove tough odors (including the very tricky garlic or onion aroma, and even fish oil) is to use typical household toothpaste. Take some toothpaste and a damp rag and rub it vigorously into the area affected by the odor. Frequently wring out and rinse the rag, and reapply. Continue this process until the odor is gone.

Once you are confident that you have removed the odor, you can finish the job by wiping down the area with a bit of lemon juice and water. Not only does the citric acid in lemon juice make it a phenomenal cleaning agent, but it leaves a wonderful citrus smell behind when you're finished!

By following these easy tips, you'll have the fish oil smell gone in no time.
